Thomas Jefferson, founder of the University of Virginia, surveying the grounds on July 18, 1817. His Ramsden theodolite stands on the tripod next to him. The paper in his hands is his 1814 two-sided plans for the grounds and the first building “Pavilion”.

He is shown wearing his riding clothes, pockets filled with his glasses, architect's rule, watch, and ivory-note slats. All details, including his clothing, boots, saddlebags, and theodolite are authenticated through rigorous research.
