Relief sculpture is a hybrid art form, with one foot in the world of the draftsman and painter, and the other firmly planted in the world of the sculptor. Its greatest asset is the ability to convey a narrative. The portrait in relief has the advantage of portraying a subject from one point of view. This is especially helpful because it allows me to work from photographic reference, which is critical in the case of honoring a person from the past.
